If you are interested for a journey through time, Agios Andreas crosses paths with Ancient Epia, the city that Agamemnon promised as a dowry to his three daughters to make Achilles choose one of them as his wife. You will come across archaeological finds dating from the Geometric to the Late Roman times. Among them we distinguish the ruins of the Sanctuary of Apollo Korythio that Pausanias visited on his tour in Messenia. Over its ruins, in the 4th century an early Christian Basilica was built which was then succeeded by the present church of Agios Andreas. On your way, you will find Frankish towers, old cobbled roads (“kalderimia”) and buildings remains from the Ottoman era. The area is also densely planted with trails/pathways waiting to be explored.
In the wider region you can visit the Archaeological Museum of Messenia, the Venetian castles of Koroni and Methoni, the fortress of Pylos, which was built by the Ottomans, the Mycenaean palace of King Nestor, in Chora, the ancient city of Ithomi and a multitude of other historical monuments.
